Overview:

The Clinical Unit Leader is a registered nurse who assists in the provision of clinical patient care in alignment with the mission, vision and values of AMGH. The Clinical Unit Leader works in collaboration with the Clinical Manager, Surgical Services to provide day to day support and direction in the delivery, availability and continuous improvement of interdisciplinary clinical programs and services that provides consistently high-quality, safe care in our operating rooms and associated surgical services.

The Clinical Unit Leader facilitates the development of staff clinical knowledge, skills and teamwork needed to function efficiently and effectively in their assigned roles; coordinates clinical activity and acts as a resource to team members in the provision of safe and therapeutic patient care. The Clinical Unit Leader demonstrates professionalism, dedication and commitment in his/her standards of nursing practice and will also play a key role in fostering cultural, care and safety improvements to the day-to-day operations of the operating rooms, while providing direct patient care, and the ability to both scrub and circulate may be required.

The individual will be available for regular OR on-call rotation and 7.5-hour shifts. The schedule is Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (work hours are set by the manager and subject to change).

 

Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse with current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Successful completion of a recognized OR Certificate course from an approved educational institution or equivalent with successful completion of the course within 6 months
  • Knowledge of ORNAC standards of practice
  • Recent and related courses/in-services in peri-operative nursing and leadership
  • ECG Interpretation course
  • ACLS
  • PALS

 

 

Required Skills:

  • Minimum five years nursing experience in a healthcare setting
  • Recent clinical experience (minimum two years) in peri-operative nursing
  • Recent leadership experience in a health care or related setting, experience teaching, working with learners and preceptorships

 

 

Abilities:

  • Assist staff with troubleshooting equipment and technical difficulties. Contact vendor/biomedical services representative as required.
  • Assist with orientation schedule of new staff.
  • Participate on small projects when required.
  • Assist with updating policies and developing new policies as required.
  • Assist with organizing educational development including mock Codes.
  • May be required to fill in for break coverage, shift vacancies such as staff illness, vacation or rest periods etc., to ensure continuity in program operations.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to by all members of health care team.
  • Accountable for initiating and acting upon quality improvement opportunities such as hand hygiene audits, risk incident investigation and follow up.
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of the Meditech information system and Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Adapt to new methods for health care delivery and other regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate attitudes and behaviours which reflect ability to remain flexible, open and positive in the face of rapidly changing needs and demands.
  • Communicate changes or concerns to all members of the interprofessional team to develop solutions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coworkers, physicians and leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with crisis/conflicts and implement resolution strategies.
  • Skilled to perform, coach and mentor staff in program-specific skills related to peri- operative nursing.
  • Able to assist with Emergency department or other units when needed.
  • Unit performance auditing, identification and implementation of continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Able to assist with OR scheduling and sick call replacement and flow with the OR department.
  • Consistently meets attendance expectation, demonstrating reliability and commitment to scheduled shifts
